Clyde Ross and Last Lost

For those wishing to tackle the 'backside 11'ers' of the Lost River Range, Clyde Ross Peak el 11724' and Last Lost Peak el 11260'~ make a good introductory pair. Probably the surest line of approach is to start from the 4WD track around 7800' along Wet Creek. From there ascend the East Face of Last Lost Peak, topping out just south of the 11260'~ summit. Continue by descending W to the 10580'~  connecting saddle and hike the gentle east facing rock and snow slope to Clyde Ross Peak. Return the same way, thus bagging 2 peaks including Last Lost x2.

As a USGS Geologist Clyde Polhemus Ross (1891-1965) worked in the State of Idaho from the mid 1920's thru mid 1950's. A prolific writer and leader in the field, he was known as 'The dean of Idaho geologists'. Credit him for compiling 'The Geologic Map of Idaho' in 1947. Photo of Clyde Ross courtesy USGS.

I believe it to be a variety of Devonian bone fish. To verify this, I showed it to Dr Roger Hoggan, an expert in Lost River Range fossils. "No", he said, "It's a cross section of horn coral". For comparison, see the Rugosa horn coral (found in Lower Cedar Creek, LRR), right in photo. I still think I hooked a 350 million year old fish.

On 8/10/91 I found no sign of prior summit visitation on 11260'~ and 11724', and placed cairns accordingly. For a short while I figured (how incorrectly) that 11260'~ had to be the last peak in this range to be climbed, hence the name.
